Shape Codes

A quick guide to standard bending shapes.

Shape codes

The standard way to describe a bend

Shape codes are the standard way of describing how a bar should be bent.

Put the right code and dimensions on your bending schedule and we will cut and bend it exactly to match. For any shape not covered, use shape code 99 and include a dimensioned sketch.

Hover over a shape to see its code. All dimensions are external (outside) dimensions, and the radii of all bends are standard unless r is given in your bending schedule.

  • 20Shape code 20 bending diagramShape code 20 · Straight bar

Straight bar, no bends. Main bars in slabs, beams and walls.

  • 32Shape code 32 bending diagramShape code 32

Hook at one end, to anchor the end of the bar.

  • 33Shape code 33 bending diagramShape code 33

Hooks at both ends, to anchor both ends of the bar.

  • 34Shape code 34 bending diagramShape code 34

Short 90° bend at one end, to finish a bar at a slab or beam edge.

  • 35Shape code 35 bending diagramShape code 35

Short 90° bends at both ends, for bars that stop at two edges.

  • 36Shape code 36 bending diagramShape code 36

Return bend at one end and a hook at the other.

  • 37Shape code 37 bending diagramShape code 37

Single 90° bend (L-bar). Starter and corner bars where walls, slabs and beams meet.

  • 38Shape code 38 bending diagramShape code 38

Two 90° bends forming a U or C. Edge bars and trimmers.

  • 39Shape code 39 bending diagramShape code 39

Tight return bend at one end, for anchorage in a short space.

  • 41Shape code 41 bending diagramShape code 41

Cranked bar that steps over another bar at a lap.

  • 42Shape code 42 bending diagramShape code 42

Cranked bar with a bend at the end.

  • 43Shape code 43 bending diagramShape code 43

Bar that dips down and back up, often used as a bent-up shear bar.

  • 45Shape code 45 bending diagramShape code 45

Bar bent up at an angle with a turned-down end.

  • 48Shape code 48 bending diagramShape code 48

Bar bent up at an angle with an upturned end.

  • 49Shape code 49 bending diagramShape code 49

Trough shape with both ends angled up.

  • 51Shape code 51 bending diagramShape code 51

Single bend to a specified radius, where a larger bend is needed.

  • 52Shape code 52 bending diagramShape code 52

    Three-sided open link.

  • 53Shape code 53 bending diagramShape code 53

U-shape with the legs turned outwards.

  • 54Shape code 54 bending diagramShape code 54

Two bends in opposite directions (Z-shape).

  • 55Shape code 55 bending diagramShape code 55

Closed rectangular link with an overlapping end.

  • 60Shape code 60 bending diagramShape code 60

Closed square or rectangular link (stirrup) that holds the main bars in beams and columns.

  • 62Shape code 62 bending diagramShape code 62

Bar with a single angled bend.

  • 65Shape code 65 bending diagramShape code 65

Bar curved to a radius, for round walls, tanks and curved beams.

  • 72Shape code 72 bending diagramShape code 72

    U-shaped link with hooked ends.

  • 73Shape code 73 bending diagramShape code 73

Closed link with one overlapping leg.

  • 74Shape code 74 bending diagramShape code 74

Closed link with a full overlap.

  • 75Shape code 75 bending diagramShape code 75

Two overlapping links, for wide beams and columns.

  • 81Shape code 81 bending diagramShape code 81

    Long, narrow closed loop (hairpin).

  • 83Shape code 83 bending diagramShape code 83

    Raised shape with angled ends.

  • 85Shape code 85 bending diagramShape code 85

    J-shape with unequal legs.

  • 86Shape code 86 bending diagramShape code 86

Helix (spiral) that wraps the main bars in round columns and piles.

  • 99Shape code 99 bending diagramShape code 99 · Any other shape. Include a dimensioned sketch

Any shape without a standard code. Include a dimensioned sketch in your bending schedule.
